How To Improve Your Gameplay Using a SCUF

Paddles

As you progress through the story in the Final Fantasy VII remake, enemies become more difficult and there are a lot more of them causing some fights to get chaotic. With Paddles, you can program them to support the way you like to play.

By default, you swap characters via the D-Pad, meaning you have to take your thumb off the stick to switch it up. Using a SCUF, you can remap D-Pad Left and D-Pad Right to the back paddles so you can keep moving during a fight while seamlessly swapping characters.

In addition, if you want to keep your thumb on Attack (square) during a fight but still want to quickly Evade or pull up the Commands Menu, this is also viable using the Paddles.

SAX Buttons

In addition to paddles, the SCUF Vantage 2 allows you to use SAX buttons. In this case, our recommendation is to Swap Characters using the SAX handily at your side while keeping your other essentials on the Paddles. You can Evade, Interact, Lock On, and use the Commands Menu using Paddles on the back while attacking during a fight.

Thumbsticks

Having the right thumbsticks that suit your playstyle and hand size will help improve how you move and look around as well as comfort during long play sessions.

Starting off with the types of thumbsticks:

  • Concave Thumbsticks are designed for more control over movement.

  • Domed Thumbsticks are designed for more accuracy.

  • Short Thumbsticks are designed for quicker movement speed.

  • Tall Thumbsticks are designed to have more angle to play with and more precise aiming.

For the Final Fantasy VII Remake, we recommend a Short Concave Thumbstick for the left and the right. It’ll allow you quick controlled movement but also allow you to move the camera quickly while being more comfortable to press in the stick to lock onto targets.

Grip

Avoid slipping during intense combat, with high performance grip: a textured non-slip surface on each SCUF controller. This is perfect for long gaming sessions to improve comfort and performance.

Vibration

Increase your comfort by ordering your SCUF without vibration modules / rumbles (or taking them out if you’re using a SCUF Vantage 2). Vibration can cause fatigue overtime from the added weight in your controller.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay Tips

Here are a few things tips to help improve gameplay:

  • Pick your action style. The new combat system is a mix of real time action and issuing commands, but if you prefer to play more like the previous Final Fantasy VII, then opt for the classic. Characters will automatically attack, move, and defend so you can focus on battle strategy via the Command Menu.

  • Heal up in between battles, as you don’t regenerate health on your own. Also, it’s better to go in prepared as you have to use ATB to use items during a fight. You can also take a quick nap on a bench to regenerate health and MP.

  • Strategize when to block and when to evade. Sometimes, it’s safer to block even if you take a little bit of damage.

  • Also begin to swap characters in your party during fights. Sometimes they can have a better advantage, like Barret can shoot things that Cloud cannot reach.

  • Take advantage of using ATB frequently to do more damage via special moves and spells.

  • Be sure to do the side quests and explore the areas you’re in. You’ll find lots of extra items, potions, gil, and materia.

  • Be sure to manage your Materia for each of your characters, as well as leveling up your Weapons to use more Materia. It’ll allow you to equip more spells and commands to use during battle.

  • You can also use extra equipment like Bangles or Armor to get extra Materia slots to use.

  • Use the Assess Materia that you get early on in the game often. It’ll give you useful info on your enemies, and lead to some good upgrades.

  • Use enemy weaknesses to your advantage. For instance, tech based enemies like Shinra’s robots are weak to electric attacks, so be sure to use Thunder against them.
